Man of values and integrity
April 14, 2004
NEARLY two years ago, in a set of bittersweet ceremonies, Rory Hume's present and former colleagues from UCLA, UC-San Francisco and other University of California campuses gathered to bid Rory adieu and to wish him well in his new position at the University of NSW.
On each occasion, colleagues recounted Rory's numerous accomplishments on behalf of the institutions he had served so well. Recalling a career that spanned more than two decades, speaker after speaker told of their first-hand experience with Rory's extraordinary style of leadership, marked by his unique commitment to excellence, to integrity, to compassion and to fairness.
There was unanimity in the view that Rory was an incredibly effective leader, a champion for justice, a tenacious advocate for equality of opportunity and a man of unwavering commitment to the highest ethical standards in every action he took. In sum, he was and is highly respected, highly regarded and revered for his values.
For the University of California, the loss of Rory to his native Australia was deeply felt; yet one could only admire the devotion he exhibited to his country of origin and respect his decision to return to Australia to lend his considerable talents to one of its great public universities.
Against this background, one can only imagine our shock and dismay when we learned of his recent resignation and the conditions that prompted that ominous decision.
While we have no desire to wade into the politics of Australian universities, we write today to right a wrong we feel strongly is being visited on a colleague we know well to be a man of honour, whose integrity is unquestionable.
It is inconceivable to us, having worked with, for and alongside Rory for so many years, to accept as anything but highly suspect, allegations of bad faith or misjudgment on his part in the execution of his duties. Indeed, his lifelong record of integrity and sound judgment would strongly argue that the citizenry of Australia should look critically within its midst to determine why a man with Rory's lengthy and unblemished record of extraordinary success would be pressured to resign from a post he so cherished and gave up so much to accept.
The recent demonstrations in support of Rory by his administrative colleagues, faculty and staff are consistent with his record and the views strongly held here in the US by all with whom he interacted. We, the undersigned, write today to record our views publicly and to make clear that we regard Rory Hume as an administrator of the utmost integrity and the highest principles.
